I rented the latest Hulk movie on Netflix this past weekend and watched it. Everyone said that it was much better than the original but I’m not entirely certain I agree. Each does some things better than the other, the first one wasn’t exactly good, but neither was the second one either, but for very different reasons. Perhaps at its heart the reason why this series doesn’t seem good to me is that the series just isn’t all that great.

Thanks to Raven Software which my friend works for and thus I was able to get a ticket to go see the new Batman movie. The second in the latest series of Batman was nothing short of stellar. I can’t begin to describe just how pleased I was with the movie, but then I guess this is what I’m trying to do with this particular article. Continue reading ‘The Dark Knight Review’
I wanted to see Wall-E on Saturday or heck even Kung Fu Panda but my daughter had seen both of those, and because of health issues I couldn’t do much in the way of physical activities, we decided to see the American Girl movie. In reality, the movie was much better than I thought and in a lot of ways a movie I was glad that my daughter got exposed to. Though I feel sad that we didn’t bring our American Girl doll to the theater to make the whole experience a little more special for her. Continue reading ‘An American Girl Review’
Wednesday I went out and saw the new Chronicles of Narnia movie, Prince Caspian. We largely decided to go because the local theater offers a particular movie every week for $5 and this week it was Prince Caspian. That being said, this book and the Silver Chair were two of my favorite books in the series so I was pretty excited to see the movie.
I went and saw Juno in the theater finally. This is probably a good time to say that while I’ve previously given a fairly bad review of Sundance, when given a choice between Sundance and other local theaters (as Juno was) we have chosen to visit Sundance largely because it is a nicer place than the often trashy and gaudy theaters that usually are around, have fewer commercials, and has way better popcorn. Though think they stopped making my danishes which sucks cause I loved em. So maybe the sort of high price isn’t that horrible, and lately they’ve taken 2 more mainstream movies in a time, though largely still artsy in spirit movies, to give them more solid movies always in the theaters.
So Juno. I was expecting a decent movie but that’s about it. In return, I think this movie may be one of the best movies I’ve seen in at least a decade. It was completely amazing and I was taken aback. The writing, the acting, the music, everything was just stellar. They advertised all the big names in this movie like Jennifer Gardner, Jason Bateman, that guy from Office, and even the kid from Arrested Development, but the girl who played Juno really came out of nowhere and stole this show. And that isn’t a small thing either because while those names were advertised, they were barely in it. This was all about Juno and everyone else was secondary. In fact, the guy from the Office had about three lines in the entire movie and I think every single one of them were advertised!!! I think it is hard for a single actor to really stay on screen for the duration she did and still carry it, but for such a young actress she did it with style. Seriously where did she come from!?
Outside of the acting, the plot line was fairly straight forward and the foreshadowing was subtle yet well placed. The story was that of a teenage girl who decided to put her baby up for adoption and her dealing with pregnancy as well as the new parents. I loved the subtleness of the movie throughout. Like when Juno first meets the couple and her sarcasm and jokes go sky high because she is nervous. Or when both of the couple is explaining how much they want a baby and you see the unease in Jason Bateman’s eyes. Just little things like that spot the movie and could be easily passed up if you don’t notice them, and I think the actors did a fabulous job pulling it off. The movie itself had a bit of an offbeat feel to it which I think definitely comes from Napolean Dynamite’s success, but wasn’t as out of it as that movie was and so made it feel a little more real which was good. The one thing I thought was odd was the handdrawn moments, mostly in the opening credits when they have a drawn look to her walking home drinking her Sunny D. I assume she liked to draw, but this wasn’t really portrayed in the movie outside these moments and some drawings in the background of her bedroom. This felt like it may have been something that was taken out of the movie at some point, but the remnants felt out of place. It wasn’t a big deal however as it was a very tiny portion of the movie.
Overall, I give the movie an A+, I find it hard to believe that any movie coming out this year will be able to even come close to competing with it.
Over the last few weeks I got to see both of these musicals in the theaters and was torn on both of them.
The premise of Across the Universe is essentially to turn Beatles songs into a musical. This was a great idea and they did it well, featuring some of the better, and stranger, songs from the Beatles. The problem was that the story itself seemed rather random. I never believed the two main characters were in love, in fact I generally felt that it was a one way love, and that the woman was mostly trying to get over her old fiance who died in the war. The storyline was not very cohesive at all and I think this was largely due to the fact that they were trying to stuff a bunch of songs in that aren’t really related. Still, I liked the movie on a lot of respects. The music was great and well done, it was very artistic in filming, and the acting and singing wasn’t bad either. I would rate the movie as a B- overall.
Sweeney Todd I am torn for different reasons. Unlike Across the Universe, this one was based on a Broadway musical and because of this the story was very cohesive and the songs worked well together. The acting throughout was very good, in particular I thought the boy in the movie was amazing. Was pleasantly surprised at Depp’s averageness at singing, it could have been much worse and I kind of expected it to be! The story line was humorous and I generally enjoyed the movie. There were two problems however. While I realize that the play itself was rather gorey, I felt that in movie format it was overdone. I can deal with some but there was a sequence of unrealistically bloody murders of like a dozen people, where they could have just shown the actual gore from one or two and got the point across just fine. The second problem is that it drug on fairly long and at times I was seriously bored. The music was very repetitive and I think this could have had something to do with that. I think because I’m not a huge fan of the gore, and a movie should never bore me to such length, I have to give Sweeney Todd a slightly lower C+ for a grade.
