After many years of relenting that I didn’t need an HDTV, my roommate and I finally caved and bought one. Our selling point wasn’t the slightly nicer picture or the generally larger screens, but rather the thiner screen that is somewhat less obtrusive in the apartment. This want of ours to have a more slimming television and the fact that both my roommate and I came upon a little extra cash, we decided to treat ourselves to a really nice quality television.
Space, the final frontier, it has been a long time since we have been able to enjoy a fresh take on Star Trek. The new Star Trek re-imagining did a lot right that hasn’t been seen in the last decade or two for the series. For far too long the series has been struggling with the same story lines, bad directing and writing, and the same stale producers unwilling to take risks. Enter J.J. Abrams who decided to take on the original series and redo it. It is a ballsy move at best considering the status of the original series, but overall I must say he did a great job.
As part of my continued perks with living with someone who works at Raven Software, I got to go see Wolverine yesterday for free. The company rented the entire theater for the event since they put out a game based on the movie, and every employee could bring one friend or family member to see it. I didn’t have high hopes for the movie (or the game for that matter, but I’ll talk about the game in a different review), and it didn’t really disappoint in that respect.
I went to see Monsters vs. Aliens with my daughter during the movie and I realized something about kids movies that I’m sure I always knew I just never really payed attention to before. Kids will love any movie that comes out aimed at them as long as it is a cartoon. Now, like me, most people will probably say “well of course.” But the real key to this is the effortlessness that the movie industry needs with kids.
I will be an abnormal man when I admit that I have always enjoyed
[amazonify]B001DDBCUU::text::::Sex and the City[/amazonify] when it was a television show on HBO. I realize it was about four women and thus often put it in the realm of being too femmy for the average man. But the show itself was smart, whitty, emotional, and funny. At the end of the day, the show was just good. Plus there was nudity and honestly what self-respecting man doesn’t like that.
To go along with my latest urge to design my MMO, I have been also wanting to watch Fantasy movies. I went through the entire trilogy of Lord of the Rings over the last couple of weeks, but I’ve also had a few movies sent out to me via Netflix of late as well. I had three fantasy movies rented in fact: Stardust, Spiderwick Chronicles, and The Golden Compass. All of them weren’t awful, none of them were great, some were surprising, some weren’t.
While I’m not a huge Trekky even though I have watched it over the years. I thought I would post the trailer for the latest Star Trek because I must admit this new Trek looks pretty awesome and I am looking forward to it.
For years Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman have been trying to get Dragonlance turned into a movie, but it always seemed to fall through. Finally they got their opportunity, but it wasn’t exactly what they likely were hoping for. Instead of an epic full feature film, Dragonlance received a straight-to-DVD treatment. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the movie is bad however, there are many decent quality DVDs that have been put out in recent days. In fact, DVD is starting to look like the best way to get those smaller time movies and television shows out to the masses, in particular in the genres of horror, science fiction, and yes even fantasy.
I rented the latest Hulk movie on Netflix this past weekend and watched it. Everyone said that it was much better than the original but I’m not entirely certain I agree. Each does some things better than the other, the first one wasn’t exactly good, but neither was the second one either, but for very different reasons. Perhaps at its heart the reason why this series doesn’t seem good to me is that the series just isn’t all that great.
I recently got NetFlix again due to my cancelation of Cable TV. And for a mini-update of that, I am quite happy with the change given that the new TV season is on keeping me busy there anyway and I save about $30 a month from what I was paying. Now I’m not going to do a review on Netflix, that’d be silly. Everyone knows what the service is and how good it is. What I want to concentrate on instead is some of the newer things that Netflix has added and what this service COULD be going forward Continue reading
