Over the weekend I went to my brother’s house in Ohio with my mom and my roommate. They recently had a new baby and we wanted to go down and see the new kid and also visit since honestly I hadn’t been to their place in 4 or 5 years if not longer. The trip is a good 8 hours away and what I learned most on this particular trip is that it is high time I stop taking trips with my mother. I swear to god she acted as bad if not worse than my daughter almost the entire trip and I was just overly annoyed by her. It is unfortunate though because there are quite a number of benefits for going with her. She pays for a good portion of the gas and hotel costs which lowers trip costs quite a bit. She also drives part of the way and on an eight hour trip, this isn’t a small deal. This may be negated however as she needs to stop 3 or 4 times along the way and dawdle at every single stop. Whereas I just want to get out of the car and to our destination. I don’t like to be in the car apparently she does.
The trip itself was ok. The saturday seemed kind of awkward, it really didn’t seem like my brother and his wife really wanted us around. Or maybe they felt the need to do stuff and they didn’t really like what we were doing, all we really did was go to a play land for one of their kids, went shoe shopping and then went and babysat the two kids. The Sunday went much better however, we went to the Toledo Art Museum which was surprisingly good, and then went to dinner at their house and chatted the night away.
A couple weeks ago I started to get the Blue Screen of Death randomly. I started by thinking it might be a recently installed program so I uninstalled everything that I had added, I then tried system restore, and after that didn’t work I tried taking out the Memory because that is a common problem. But intermixed with this was that my computer kept on not detecting the hard drive on boot and eventually it got to the point where I could only have windows up for about 5 or 10 minutes. I am fully certain that the problem is a hard drive failure and being that it is only 14 months old I decided to send it in for a replacement for manufacturer’s warranty.
Thinking on it, it almost doesn’t seem worth it though as it’d only cost me about $100 for a brand new 500GB HD, and it’ll likely cost me about $40 to send in this hard drive in order to get a replacement for my 320GB HD (would likely cost about $70 to get a new 320). It has crossed my mind that doing it through warranty is more effort than it is worth. But honestly, I think this is what they count on anyway. At the end of the day, if it had lasted 6-9 months more for HD prices to drop further, I may have decided to just get a new one… if it were $75 for a 500GB, I think that would have been worth the extra $35.
Anyway in a round about way this has been my explanation of why my updates have been more sporadic. I am now using my laptop as a primary computer which is doable, but not as comfortable to type long posts and thus I probably won’t post much for the next few weeks.
YAY! In a speech talking about whether Heston as president of the NRA would allow the banning of guns for personal use, he so famously stated “in my cold dead hands.” Well you’re dead, and since everyone cheered at the statement, I assume that they too agree that once Heston dies we could ban the right for personal use of guns. He’s dead, so let’s get to it Senators, draft a bill banning it. We finally got the NRA on board with us from the words of their own president.
Call me an April Fool’s Scrooge, but this has got to be my least favorite event of the year. At one time I am sure it was supposed to be a holiday of good fun, but now it is just plain annoying (for good fun call speak like a pirate day). I for one was happy that this year I did not have my daughter for the first time in several years. You see she likes to April Fool’s as I’m sure a lot of kids do. However, I don’t think she actually gets it. She understands that you are supposed to play pranks and such on people but the jokes she pulls largely equate to a “look over there a monkey! April Fool’s!” and yes the april fool’s bit happens almost immediately after the look! bit.
Now adays, the internet seems to be a lot like my eight year old daughter. Several years ago a website decided to start posting fake news stories. They were often very funny, based in something that could happen but you couldn’t believe did. People would often go on for days afterwards talking about the “news” on such and such event, not fully knowing that it was a joke. It turned out to be a wild hit that spawned a yearly event where nearly every website posts an April Fool’s joke that is extremely lame, and transparently false. Followed by an immediate “APRIL FOOL’S” at the end which makes you roll your eyes because like anybody couldn’t tell what it was.
My message here to anyone who might post these stupid news stories… stop! For the love of God stop! It was cute when it started, but like any child it you guys have overdone it and lowered the quality of it so for the love of god stop. You’ve ruined it, I hope you are proud of yourselves. About the only one I’ve seen this particular year that was decent was this particular example largely because it leaked out before April Fool’s and ya know what the screens were good.
