Casual Games

I recently became re-attached to the casual games market because of a purchase of My Word Coach (I’ll have a review for it in another week or two). I started playing Animal Crossing and Brain Age again and have been enjoying my time with these games after a very long hiatus. But this re-interest with more info on the upcoming Wii Fit from GDC got me thinking about the future of this market.. and how Nintendo could further it.

To me it is no doubt that Nintendo has the market cornered on these types of games. Besides Brain Age, Big Brain Academy and Animal Crossing… games like Wii Sports, Wii Fit, and some of their channels are all fairly elegant and fun toys to play with. But they also tend to use the same hexagon/pentagram format to rate how you are doing in these games (I think this started with BBA cause Brain Age does not have it). It makes me wonder why Nintendo hasn’t put out a central channel that takes all these stats and allows you to look at them without looking at the various games. Not only could you keep yourself updated on your status in them, you could look at what tasks you have done on a daily basis, you could set up a schedule on what you’d like to do (if you really want to keep a routine), show your friend’s and family’s similar stats, and even rank you and such. It looks like Wii Fit is planning on having some sort of basic channel that might do this… why not just join them all and have every future game do it?

This would also allow Nintendo to maybe re-release the two first brain age games as a  special enhanced edition. Maybe bringing both games into a single cartridge with the hex type rating and the ability to upload this stuff onto the Wii’s channel. They could add in an extra 50 sudoku games and maybe even a bonus of some sort to further give people reason to rebuy this… They could do this with several games really… What about packaging Wii Sports & Wii Play (Wii Play Sports?) with the ability? I think this setup that Nintendo is great and it is really a shame they aren’t using it as they could.

Small Site Tweaks

Some may have noticed the icons on the bottom of every post that I added a week or two ago. This is for various social sites to make it easy to add a post to them. There originally were far too many and I got those narrowed down to about a dozen which should make it just a single row of icons per post. If anyone has any in particular they’d like to see added or removed, feel free to tell me.

I also added a few plugins that help me manage, as well as one that will give categories icons, I just haven’t added any pictures in yet but I’m very excited about this idea.

Juno Reaction

I went and saw Juno in the theater finally. This is probably a good time to say that while I’ve previously given a fairly bad review of Sundance, when given a choice between Sundance and other local theaters (as Juno was) we have chosen to visit Sundance largely because it is a nicer place than the often trashy and gaudy theaters that usually are around, have fewer commercials, and has way better popcorn. Though think they stopped making my danishes which sucks cause I loved em. So maybe the sort of high price isn’t that horrible, and lately they’ve taken 2 more mainstream movies in a time, though largely still artsy in spirit movies, to give them more solid movies always in the theaters.

So Juno. I was expecting a decent movie but that’s about it. In return, I think this movie may be one of the best movies I’ve seen in at least a decade. It was completely amazing and I was taken aback. The writing, the acting, the music, everything was just stellar. They advertised all the big names in this movie like Jennifer Gardner, Jason Bateman, that guy from Office, and even the kid from Arrested Development, but the girl who played Juno really came out of nowhere and stole this show. And that isn’t a small thing either because while those names were advertised, they were barely in it. This was all about Juno and everyone else was secondary. In fact, the guy from the Office had about three lines in the entire movie and I think every single one of them were advertised!!! I think it is hard for a single actor to really stay on screen for the duration she did and still carry it, but for such a young actress she did it with style. Seriously where did she come from!?

Outside of the acting, the plot line was fairly straight forward and the foreshadowing was subtle yet well placed. The story was that of a teenage girl who decided to put her baby up for adoption and her dealing with pregnancy as well as the new parents. I loved the subtleness of the movie throughout. Like when Juno first meets the couple and her sarcasm and jokes go sky high because she is nervous. Or when both of the couple is explaining how much they want a baby and you see the unease in Jason Bateman’s eyes. Just little things like that spot the movie and could be easily passed up if you don’t notice them, and I think the actors did a fabulous job pulling it off. The movie itself had a bit of an offbeat feel to it which I think definitely comes from Napolean Dynamite’s success, but wasn’t as out of it as that movie was and so made it feel a little more real which was good. The one thing I thought was odd was the handdrawn moments, mostly in the opening credits when they have a drawn look to her walking home drinking her Sunny D. I assume she liked to draw, but this wasn’t really portrayed in the movie outside these moments and some drawings in the background of her bedroom. This felt like it may have been something that was taken out of the movie at some point, but the remnants felt out of place. It wasn’t a big deal however as it was a very tiny portion of the movie.

Overall, I give the movie an A+, I find it hard to believe that any movie coming out this year will be able to even come close to competing with it.

A Quick Vacation!

My roommate and I have been suffering from cabin fever of late, as are most Wisconsinites these days I think, and we decided that we really just needed to get out of the apartment for a quick break. We orginally were going to go to Ohio with my mom to see my brother and his newborn son, but she got sick and rather than risk getting his kids sick as well, we decided to call off the trip for now and do it when everyone is ok. This left us in a pickle. For one, we were frustrated by the process of having somewhere to go and being drug around by my mom for 3 days as she tried to convince us she was well enough to go and this made our cabin fever worse. But we had no where to go otherwise, since it was a bit of a holiday weekend, we knew anyplace that’d be fun would be booked and thus we dropped Chicago out of our thoughts.

Then I found a newly renovated hotel in Wisconsin Dells that just opened a new indoor waterpark that had a large glass roof so that you could lay out in the sun all year round. We thought this sounded like the perfect solution. We would get sun and have fun in a waterpark. We did want to go out further than the Dells, and we didn’t want to spend quite so much for a hotel, but it did give us something fun to get out and do at the same time. So less than 2 days later we were out the door headed to the Dells.

Overall, I’d say the hotel was ok. You could tell it was renovated, some parts still had their old feel and it felt like it was a hotel put together very piecemeal. It had several long chunks that made for an extremely long hotel and 3 waterpark areas, 1 on each end and 1 in the middle. This meant to reach one you would either need a ferry or to walk all the way to the other end of the hotel which either way was really inconvenient (really cold in swimsuit or long walk, we chose long walk). I think we both enjoyed Friday night the best. The hotel wasn’t quite as crowded as it was Saturday, and for some reason in the wave pool under the dome they had the waves going higher and more frequently which both combined made for a much more enjoyable experience in the same poolt han we had Saturday. We also tried their lazy river and hot tub in the middle park but the hot tub was too crowded, too chemically, and too cold so we quickly left. The Lazy river was nice but that whole area was really overcrowded. We wished that the hotel would have chosen to include another hot tub in the wave pool area to allow more places for adults to enjoy but if it was that chemically we probably wouldn’t have been able to go in anyway. Saturday we just decided not to return and stick with the wave pool. I feel bad though because I don’t like waterslides and wouldn’t go down any with my roommate who wouldn’t go without me so I feel like that was a wasted part of the trip. What we really enjoyed though was just lounging in the sun. It was very refreshing and relaxing and I am glad we were able to do it because i think it helped.

Unfortunately the day after we returned we received 1 inch of ice followed by 3 or 4 inches of snow which meant we were stuck in our apartment again which largely undid much of what  we got out of the trip. Still I am much better off, and though my roommate will not admit it I thinks he is as well.

Sims 2: Bon Voyage, Teen Stuff, & Beyond

I realize that Bon Voyage and Teen Stuff have been out for awhile now on Sims 2, however we just bought it about a month ago when my roommate was looking to keep herself busy during my raids and so decided to pick up sims 2. I decided that it might be fun for a little while for her if she had some new stuff to play with so I got both of these packs (she tends to only like building and even with that tends to get frustrated by the game rather quickly).

So I’ll start with Teen Stuff as that one is small. The set contains a lot of clothing this time around, which unfortunately can only be worn in the teen years. This makes sense given the title of the stuff pack, but some are very cool and would have been nice to keep around for later years. Of larger note are the items which are almost universally pretty cool in design. They are far more stylish than the average sims objects and mostly include desks and bookshelves. However, there are new computer designs, new light fixtures, a new tv set, and even dirty clothes for the floor (clever). Overall, i think this was one of my favorite stuff packs. I thought some of the Glamour Stuff objects were nice, but only a fraction, and kids stuff was nice only for the fact that there wasn’t much for kids. This one brings stuff for everyone at all times, and most of it is good.

Bon Voyage I really didn’t have much expectation for. Just by nature that I do not like going to community lots, I did not like having a shopping district or a downtown to go to… and University was only livable because you actually spent a lot of time in it (not like the other lots where you go to quickly and you leave). I guess I’m a homebody, but I don’t like the load screens at all and it doesn’t help that when I do go through the effort there is little to be done in the new areas that I can’t just do at home. The only real purpose previously has been to get magazines or to buy a cell phone or something silly like that, nothing I would actually do on a regular basis. However, I have been pleasantly surprised by the vacations… it seems to be a happy medium for me. I do not want to spend all my time there, but I do spend enough there that I feel I get my money’s worth. I’ve also found that as I stay at better hotels, there is more to do on my hotel lot (the 2$ hotel has a spa, a massage, a steam room, and a restaurant. There are a ton of little things to do that I can’t really do at home. There are trinkets to buy, secret areas to go to, you can swim in the ocean or catch fish that you can’t normally catch, eat food you normally can’t eat (can you make them too? i can’t figure out how if you can…. though maybe you need to buy special ingredients?) , play on cool objects, buy cool stuff, learn massages, learn gestures, dances, meet new people, learn teleporting (haven’t yet), etc… and I like the picture taking too… there is just a plethora of new things to do on these vacations and I enjoy it greatly. I have only gone to the island one thus far, and really look forward to trying out the Asian and camping destinations, but for some reason my sims only have wants to go to the island destination so I’m not sure what’s up with that. The objects in this expansion are kinda cool too… I LOVE the asian theme, and have ideas for a couple of the giant objects, the camping theme is ok, I find a lot of the play objects very funny like the axe throwing target. I also love the new roofs, first new roof added into the game since it’s inception and am happy to see some new variations on that. They also snuck in jewelry into this expansion which was something I wasn’t at all expecting but am thrilled by. This is something that should have been in since the start and couldn’t believe it wasn’t. They went all out too adding nose rings, rings on different fingers, high ear rings, lip rings, and eyebrow rings. Hopefully they will decide to add belly button rings in the future.

In the next couple of weeks EA will be launching yet another expansion Freetime. I’ve got to admit that I’m thoroughly excited about it. This one concentrates on giving your sims things to do around the house. Obviously right up my alley. This expansion really seems to build off Open For Business with how it seems to be set. Which is odd cause while that expansion was one of my favorites, it generally wasn’t well received. It adds 8 or 9 “hobbies” which look very much like the old badge system, just more clear because it is the stat bars that they’ve always used previously. Most of these hobbies can start a business from (so if you are a quilter you can sell quilts, or sell vases if you are a potter, etc), in addition to this, they’ve added contests to put your stuff up against (kinda like 4H I guess lol). This will help alleviate the issue of how do you sell a dance other than the naughty way? They also decided to add 5 new professions, some look familiar like entertainer and dancer (we have a few similar already), but architect & oceanographer are nice! Also from the walkthrough they put out on it it seems like they are also adding a new aspiration (maybe related to the hobbies? I couldn’t tell). And a new achievement meter which goes up as you fulfill lifetime goals and you can use those for a new reward system not unlike the business rewards (they showed off the summoning aliens reward and second aspiration reward, am interested to see the rest). It seems that they are really going all out on this expansion and can’t wait to get my grubby little hands on it! Gotta wait a little longer though.

Online Features

You know as companies have gotten used to the internet with regards to games, the features in games for the internet have gotten progressively crappy. In the late 90s and even into the early 00s it was fairly standard to provide free content for the game on the website. This kept players coming back to the website on a regular basis so that not only were you keeping interest of your game up, but you could also advertise new products and expansions to them.

Of note on these types of games was Petz & the various Sims games. Petz seems weird to point out as it has turned into a serious of cheap games, but in the 90s when it first started before any real company bought it, it was a fairly nice little PC toy to play with… you could go to the site to download free toys and breeds for your pet and they generally had 1 new one per month. This really helped the longevity of the game, but it also made you feel like you got your money’s worth from it and made me at least more prone to buying future versions. Now if you go to their website, you can download free wallpapers and screenshots! WOW! This doesn’t at all make me want to buy the game.

Sims is kind of a different position. Obviously they too have switched their stances on this subject at one point in time. You go to Sims 2’s website and you see that they used to offer free items from time to time, usually corresponding with holidays. But they haven’t really offered any new free download in nearly a year and even those downloads were weak at best (some odd car themed stuff and advertisements for Ford). You tend to see a similar thing happen over at Simcity 4’s website where you could at one time count on free landmarks to download but not for a very long time. Now the specialness of this case is that Sims has really been the only sims product to launch iin a very long time. Simcity 4 is older than sims 2, and hasn’t had an expansion in years and can be considered a dead product. Simcity societies is a worthless product and a waste of money if you buy it. And that’s pretty much it with those games. Though sims has been continually going, I think they are reaching the end of 2’s cycle as reports of 3 become more prevelant… and it is also popular. So it isn’t surprsing that largely dead games are not getting updates, and Sims has decided to go with making you pay for stuff packs instead of getting anything for free and is so popular on its own that it doesn’t need the help of downloads to keep the franchise going. Still Sims 1 did have free nearly monthly downloads for people to enjoy. What makes this particularly bad is that EA/Maxis actually wanted to make the sims 2 website more central to the sims community by offering an exchange. But because they didn’t want to be sued they kept it to people & lots, no custom objects to be had in the exchange and thus if anything EA has just further solidified The Sims Resource as the central destination to go to exchange… This is really where they could have used the free objects to bring people in and use the website but I have a feeling they decided the website cost too much money at some point.

Free stuff I realize has come and gone. At one point it seems companies were able to make money, or at least not losing money on these downloads… now they are all about charging you for what used to come for free. I realize it is a sign of changing times and I should be happy I get anything for free from a big company. But I can’t help but feel sad that this aspect has changed so harshly.

Suggestions for next EQ2 Expansion

Now that Rise of Kunark has settled in, and mostly disappointedly at that… I have started thinking about the next expansion and how they can move this game forward….

Looking at the bunch of expansions there are some things worth noting… I think the current progression of what worked best and what hasn’t is Eof, KoS, and then RoK and DoF are very close to each other. Currently I would rank RoK slightly ahead of DoF which was an expansion that I never liked in the least bit, both in theme and in content. Before I began my ideas, I wanted to do a quick rundown on the positives and negatives of each of the expansions to date.

DoF +: Different landscape than had been in game, climbing, PvP… -: Largely reused creatures, crappy and worthless city, arena never was fleshed, badly designed areas

KoS +: Really cool areas, good and challenging raids & instances, AA… -: Was sometimes a pain to travel around, small zones meant lots of load times, inclusion of AA helped some on lower levels but wasn’t much for anyone other than 60+

EoF +: Something for everyone, really well designed and funny quests, large & vertical zones, the dynamics of the race was cool & refreshing, new AAs to balance, secondary tradeskills were great, challenging raids… -: raids were sometimes too hard for much of the population, despite majorly filling in some large gaps in game play thanks to zones like Klak & Crushbone, there was still a huge gap from about 58-66.

RoK +: Ginormous zones!, interesting though fairly basic race, decent instances, some areas are really cool & interesting to visit (entrance of Chardok)… -: WoWization of EQ2 (too easy, too brainless, no group dynamics whatsoever until you get to the harder instances, too focused on questing, bad & cheezy graphics often a problem), there seems to be a giant raid gap where the real raiding guilds find the raids far too easy while everyone else can’t even get past the first tier, the loot is god aweful, most of the time being worse than anything from the previous two expansions. And just god awful contested content.

So why the recap? My big idea for how to deal with the upcoming expansion is to essentially revamp the game as is…. I can imagine a lot of people would think this is a silly idea. But the reason behind it is good. While Qeynos in particular maintains its dominance as the city of choice, the areas of the old world are largely underused (with the exception of Runnyeye which is still one of the most popular dungeons in the 30s and almost always you can find a group running it), this is largely because EoF really changed the scope of everything because it was soo good, and also because server numbers are down and now anyone restarting is likely starting in one of the newer cities (they spread out the newbs!). A way to fix this is to revitalize the content. People are bored with Commonlands and Antonica and Feerrott… I think this is part of the reason why EoF was received so well, people needed new stomping grounds in the lower levels.

But my idea isn’t only to just make the old content interesting again, it is to do a better job of interweaving levels. One thing I have absolutely adored about EoF was not only that a level 10 could conceivably run into Loping Plains on accident and get his ass handed to him, but also that the whole zone ran from 1-25 pretty much. That and the bigger zones and my idea brings me to the thought of a combining of zones to make for larger old zones. Under this plan Antonica & Thundering Steppes; Commonlands, Nektolos Forest, & Darklight Wood, Rivervale & Enchanted Lands, and Sinking Sands & Pillars of Flames would be combined using the RoK technology to make the super zones come alive in these older zones.

In addition to this combination, we would see new content brought to life within these older zones. The first that I’d like to see added is new areas added via climbing. Many of the old zones have unreachable mountains that we could go up. Now these mountains were never intended to be used as play areas and thus they are often too narrow to use as solid areas… however you could easily create a climbing area in some of these sections and add high level guards and create a raid instance in the heart of thundering steppes. New ways to climb in these areas would be a really nice and easy way to really add to the game! In addition, old instances like FMG, Bloodskull, and some of the contested ones like Wailing Caves and Blackburrow would receive a revamp. Some would get level bumps (what if you made Bloodskull into a level 30 group instance and moved the heritage out?), and some could receive new areas (Blackburrow is currently a small zone, maybe we could unearth a new previously unknown cavern). I think this is important on some of the older unused zones like Blackburrow or Bloodskull that could find new uses.

With these reworks, I think it’d be cool to redo some of the graphics as well and add some new foes to the areas we know and love, make them more dynamic… add some one up nameds like the new low level areas have, take out heroic non-dungeon areas like Rivervale and Lavastorm (leave some parts heroic to keep things interesting but LS & EF especially were initially meant to be end zone contents and thus the difficulty of them was high, now they are long in the tooth and hard to play cause they weren’t meant for smaller groups/solo). I’d like to see them also pick two or three old enemies and come up with new and updated graphics to those as well as sound… who isn’t sick of hearing the cackle of the skeletons? Even if there was a different cackle to listen to, it might be nice. What about new effects for items both new and old to really add some jazz to them? Looking at some of the pictures of the epic weapons comin up, they look pretty awesome and I think this is going to be a direction that SOE goes with in future expansions so this will need to occur retroactively at some point.

I’d like to see an addition of 2 new secondary tradeskills. I think that Tinkering & Transmuting were great sucesses! Theyare difficult, useful, and make for a good money sink all at the same time, but the problem with them is that there are only two and only limited uses of each. Tinkering seems to be the more useful of the two in the long run given its no-trade items, but you do need a few transmuting items. It’d be nice if there was more options as a group. That being said I don’t know what they would add. Once upon a time, I thought item appearance changing (both in color and form) would be interesting to add into a secondary tradeskill but with the addition of the appearance tabs and the obvious use of them in higher level tradeskills (very colorful I think so that people will want them even if they don’t equip them), this might not be as nice. And you don’t want to add too much more in the way of benefits and what not or make current tradeskills/mobs useless… however, one thing I think you could do is maybe add a slotting procedure where the new tradeskiller could create a slot or two or even three in an item to put transmuted items in. This would be extremely limited though. Still I’d like to see something in this manner.

I’d also like to see 4 new classes added to the game… one for each main type… fighter, mage, cleric, and scout. Though honestly I think this might be a tall order in one expansion and would settle for 2 (I’d suggest Scout & Tank first) and do the other two in the following expansion after that. My choice for these would be a kinetics-like healer (kinetics from CoH… basically they dmg/debuff opponents in order to heal/buff the group.. it offers a really interesting dynamic into the game that this one doesn’t have), a mage-like fighter (I really enjoyed both the reaver and the thane in dark age of camelot, if they could make maybe a chain tank with some offensive spells I think it would create a very different setting for a tank (yes I know SK does this currently, but I mean one that can do serious damage which is ofset by their worse armor, maybe also taking away shield or at least anything but a buckler not that most tanks use more than a buckler)), the beastlord as a scout (i’m torn on this largely because we have a lot of pet classes and this class would be a disappointment regardless in this game because it likely wouldn’t be overpowered… however there isn’t a class with a pet that has no ability to range attack so I think that would be a decent  combo here, give it some nice debuffs and average dps and you all of sudden have a somewhat different scout class), and for mage… I don’t know but it seems like the mages we have aren’t at all interesting.  I realize classes aren’t easy to deal with because of raid & group dynamics needing to get balanced with them in it, but this would be a much better way to go than yet another race and yet another new city. Keep the cities we have, give the races a break and make some new classes. One thing I noticed with the Sarnak is that while I wanted to try them, I’ve played most of the main class types and am bored of what they had to offer, thus I didn’t really know what to play as a Sarnak… and so didn’t. This can be alleviated a bit, also add 2 new char slots with this expansion to help (expansion only though! don’t make it something everyone gets, make this something you get with the expansion.

Package Bloodlines & Splitpaw into this expansion as perks. This way those who didn’t buy them yet, will finally get them. And in so doing also bring the explosives into the normal game. This is something that could be done not only in the original content, but also DoF & KoS to really spice up zones. I would say include Fallen Dynasty into this as well and then you guys would get cheap new zones at every level, but FD was a great AP on its own and is still worth the buy. The other two really aren’t anymore and would be more to make life easier on those of us who have it to group there since they have group zones in them.

Increase the guild cap, tradeskill cap and level cap by 5 instead of 10, and then do the following expansion by 15. I Know this would be unorthodoxed, and unlikely. But it would give a greater intrinsic value that would be easy to see. It would allow some of the newer zones to be this new 80=90 level range that would need to be filled and give people something to work on. In addition to this add a new level to the AA lines. You could do one of three things… add a new skill after each line, add a new general class line (so instead of 5 lines there would be 6 to the shaman line, perhaps you could do something unique here too like adding a little of every stat or mitigation, or maybe improving a base quality of the class), or you could add an entirely new tree that would contain general things that any class could access (this tree could have a tradeskill line in it, or travel lines, or maybe a line that could reduce cost of menders & housing, etc).

If the guild housing isn’t in yet, this would be the perfect opportunity to add some. I’d also like to see some new patterns for the guild heralds (both in the basic symbol as well as trimmings that could be added to the cloaks), and honestly also wouldn’t mind seeing personal patterns (so you could choose to display a guild logo or one that you made just for yourself). I would like to see a general sweep of guild rewards to be more all encompassing. I have a feeling that some of the guild housing plans are going to do just that, but I think it is silly to have 80 levels and at best you get something every 5. Give us more for these levels at different intervals! And if you are going to wow-ize everything, why not take their banking idea and make it so guild bank is box slotted instead of tabbed and the guild levels would grant access to a new slot, where each additional one would cost more and then you’d need to put a bag in it. It wouldn’t be much but would be a minor cash drag on the economy and would also give carpenters a little more work (btw isn’t it ironic that EoF did such a great job at money drains and then RoK just went and killed all that work?)

New Underwater zones!!! I think this is generally something a lot of people have kind of wanted for awhile. There are some pretty cool underwater areas in RoK (In Seb mainly), and I’d like to see more complete zones. You could do this by basically connecting some of the older zones (so you could potentially have an area between Nek & thundering steppes underwater). This could also open up lost areas (though I don’t know the lore well so they may not be as lost as I think) like Grobb, Oggokk (this i think is in or near one of the dungeons currently), najena, guk, befallen, etc (I know odus is also wanted but think they should hold off for a bit on it still, I honestly think on the next expansion they should have mostly brand new content with a touch of eq1 addition). If they still don’t want to do pure underwater areas, I would suggest adding some new planes with this expansion but if they ever touch those planes seriously more than they currently have… for the love of god don’t make the mistakes they made in EQ1 with the planes.

3 New Deities… Don’t know anything about the EQ deities really so can’t make any particular note on what would be good… though I’d like to see a new tradeskill one that might help secondary tradeskillers in some fashion… I actually really enjoyed the RoK Deities as i think they added a lot to the game. If they bring in new classes, it wouldn’t be a long shot to have a new deity that favors them. Also in with this, I am not sure if RoK will eventually get T8 god powers, but obviously if it doesn’t this, and maybe another addition to the god powers should be made in this expansion to further flesh out that system.  (Actually guild gods might be a kind of cool twist where maybe a guild could worship a neutral god in addition to personal gods and the leader could sacrafice status for a guild wide power… would be interesting).

If you can’t tell, what I think was really special about EoF was the little bit of everything that they had. It offered great areas for all levels, new challenging high level conten, great loot, and new things to do. These are things I’d really like to see repeated in some fashion in the next expansion.

Finally… my pipe dream that wouldn’t happen in a million years… I think it’d be a great storyline if the dragons got fed up with the people of Norrath, came down and devastated Freeport and Qeynos. This would be a great live event too of having everyone come and try to protect the cities against the dragons. And could have potential of getting rid of the good vs evil system that remains on the non-pvp servers. But in the end the dragons would defeat the cities, destroying them and thus transforming the cities and he areas around them into high level zones, instances and raiding areas. Wouldn’t it be cool if like Freeport turned into a level 90 raid zone? Or if Stormhold became one of the standard instances?) Or to go near the old city gates and see everything burned and scorched, dead bodies littering everywhere… it would make for a really classic event that I think anyone involved in would remember for years to come. Though I think you could make it so that “survivors would get moved to the newer cities… forcing such a move I think would be the main reason why SOE would never touch this idea… though I think it would make for a great expansion and would really help the game out by lowering the amount of new player areas dramatically.

Brother had his baby

My mom called me this morning and left a message on my voice mail to tell me that my brother’s wife had her baby this morning and all was well. But what really caught my interest was in the end of the message when she made the statement that “you’re an uncle again!”

It seems to me that this isn’t an uncommon thing to do either. On kids past the first you are a dad, again, or an uncle again, etc…. But how does this make sense? Did I lose status somewhere of my uncleship? Have all my other nieces and nephews died? And if so, how is this an appropriate way to tell me that 5 children have mysteriously died over night.

I mean I understand the practice. You want to throw out a congratulations of some sort to everyone somehow, even if I wasn’t exactly involved or even remotely important in the process. I think this especially works with parents who you really do want to congratulate. But isn’t there something else we could say? Perhaps “Congratulations on your new son”? Do we have to say “You are a XXX again,” therefor implicating that you at some point were not? Or you could say “You are still an uncle!” I know, I know, it doesn’t have the same spark.
